A decorated holiday table has one constraint that a decorated mantel does not: people have to eat at it, pass things across it and see each other over it. Most tables that look wonderful in photographs are difficult to actually sit at.
The rules below are small and they are what separates the two.
The sight-line rule
Nothing in the middle of the table should sit between about twelve and twenty inches high, because that is exactly seated eye level. Decoration belongs either below it, where people look over, or well above it, where they look under.
This single rule fixes most centrepieces. A low runner of foliage and candles works; a tall arrangement on a stand works; a medium arrangement blocks the person opposite for the entire meal.
Chair backs are underused
Decorating chair backs adds height and colour at a level that interferes with nothing, and it reads immediately when people walk into the room. It is the most visible decoration per unit of effort available.
Simple covers or a tied bow at the top of each chair is enough. Anything that hangs low gets sat on and crushed within minutes.
Cutlery holders do two jobs
Small silverware holders decorate each place setting and, more usefully, keep cutlery together when a table is being laid quickly by several people. At a table of twelve that is a genuine convenience.
They also solve the problem of where a place setting begins and ends, which matters on a crowded table more than on a spacious one.
Ribbon is the cheapest cohesion available
A single ribbon colour repeated across chair backs, napkins and the tree pulls a room together far more effectively than matching ornaments do. Velvet in particular reads as considered and costs very little.
Repetition is what does the work. One ribbon in one place is a detail; the same ribbon in four places is a scheme.
Leave room for food
The commonest failure is a table decorated as if the food will not need space. Serving dishes are large, and a table that is full before anything is served becomes a logistical problem at the worst moment.
Decide where the dishes go first and decorate around them. A runner down one half rather than the centre is often the answer for a table that will hold platters.
Candles: height and position
Pillar candles read best in groups of odd numbers at varying heights, and they must be clear of anything that hangs. A candle beside a garland is the single most common holiday fire risk in a home.
On a table where children are seated, use LED candles without apology. The difference at a lit table is much smaller than it is on a shelf, and the anxiety saved is worth it.

There is one delivery rate, $5.99, and it is removed at $49. Orders are packed in one to three business days and travel for five to ten, so plan on six to thirteen business days between placing an order and opening the box. Everything ships from Brooklyn, NY, to United States addresses.
