Ornament material decides almost everything practical about an ornament: whether it survives a household with animals or small children, how it stores, how it photographs and how long it lasts. It is also the thing least often stated clearly on a shelf label.
Every ornament listing here names its material in the title for that reason. Here is what each one means in practice.
Stained and coloured glass
Glass does something no other material does: it transmits light rather than reflecting it, so a stained glass ornament near a bulb glows from within. That is the entire case for it and it is a strong one.
It is also genuinely fragile, heavy for its size, and needs a sturdy branch. In a household with a dog’s tail at tree-branch height, glass belongs on the upper third of the tree or not on the tree at all.
Wood
Wooden ornaments survive everything. They are light, they do not shatter, they tolerate being dropped, and they store for decades without special care. For a family tree that gets decorated by children, wood is the obvious answer.
The trade-off is that wood is opaque and matt, so it reads quietly rather than catching light. A tree of only wooden ornaments can look flat, which is why mixing materials generally works better than committing to one.
Shatterproof plastic
Shatterproof ornaments have improved considerably and the good ones are hard to distinguish from glass at more than a few feet. They are light, safe and cheap enough to replace.
Up close they look like plastic, and they scratch rather than chip. For a tree seen mainly from across a room, that is an acceptable trade; for a small tree on a table it is more noticeable.
Fillable ornaments
Clear fillable ornaments are a different proposition again: they are a container, and what goes in them is the decoration. They work well as an activity and as a way of making something specific to a year.
They are almost always plastic, which is what makes them safe to hand to a child with a handful of glitter. The seam is visible, and that is the compromise.
Storage decides how many survive the year
More ornaments are broken in January and rediscovered broken in November than are ever broken on a tree. Compartmented storage, or wrapping individually, is what determines whether a glass collection lasts.

Glass at the top where nothing reaches, wood and shatterproof lower down where children and animals are. That gets the light-catching quality where it is seen and puts the durable material where the risk is.

Ordering, delivery and returns
There is one delivery rate, $5.99, and it is removed at $49. Orders are packed in one to three business days and travel for five to ten, so plan on six to thirteen business days between placing an order and opening the box. Everything ships from Brooklyn, NY, to United States addresses.
