Holiday lighting without tripping a breaker

C7 LED bulbs draw a fraction of what incandescents did, which changes the whole calculation. Watts, string limits, outdoor ratings and the candle question.

The old rules about how many strings can be joined together were written for incandescent bulbs, and they are wildly conservative for LEDs. A C7 LED replacement bulb draws around three watts against fifteen for the incandescent it replaces, which changes what is possible by a factor of five.

Here is the arithmetic and the handful of safety points that still apply.

What the wattage difference means

A twenty-five-socket C7 string with incandescent bulbs draws roughly 375 watts. The same string with three-watt LED replacements draws about seventy-five. On a fifteen-amp household circuit that is the difference between four strings and many more.

The practical upshot is that most households can now light a whole facade from a single outdoor outlet, which was not true a decade ago.

End-to-end limits are set by the plug, not the circuit

Every string states a maximum number that can be connected end to end, and that limit exists because of the current passing through the first plug and its wiring, not because of the breaker.

That number is on the tag and it must be respected even with LEDs. Exceeding it heats the connector at the start of the run, which is where these failures actually happen.

Outdoor ratings are not a formality

Indoor-rated strings used outside fail at the sockets, where water gets in and corrodes the contact. The failure is usually a dead section rather than anything dramatic, but corroded contacts are also how heat builds up.

Check the tag for an outdoor rating and use outdoor-rated extension leads. Cover unused outlets on a lead rather than leaving them open to rain.

Colour temperature matters more than brightness

Warm white at around 2700K reads as traditional and photographs warmly. Cool white above 4000K reads as bright and modern, and next to a warm string it looks blue rather than white.

Mixing temperatures across one display is the commonest visual mistake and it is very hard to unsee. If you are replacing bulbs in an existing run, match the temperature of what is already there rather than the brightness.

Unscented pillar candles, and the honest advice

Real candles are unmatched for atmosphere and they are the single biggest fire risk in a decorated room. Never near garland, never near a tree, never unattended, and never in a lantern that was not built for flame.

Test before you hang

Plug in every string while it is still on the floor. Finding a dead section after it is fixed along a gutter is a job nobody enjoys twice, and a fair proportion of strings fail in storage rather than in use.

Keep spare bulbs from the same pack. On C7 and similar sockets a single failed bulb is a two-second fix if you have one and a whole-string replacement if you do not.
