The decorations that break are almost never broken on the tree. They are broken in a box in a warm attic over eleven months, and discovered broken in November when it is too late to replace them from a range that has moved on.
Three things do the damage, and each has a straightforward answer.
Heat is the worst of the three
An attic in a New York summer regularly exceeds a hundred degrees. Plastic ornaments soften and distort, adhesives fail, tinsel goes brittle, and candle wax deforms permanently.
A cupboard inside the living envelope of the house is far better than any amount of good packing in a hot roof space. If the attic is the only option, put the heat-sensitive things – candles, plastic, anything glued – somewhere else.
Compression flattens everything soft
Tinsel garland stored under weight comes out flat and stays flat. Ribbon creases permanently. Anything with a bow loses it.
Soft items want to be on top, in their own container, uncompressed. It is the reason garland is worth storing loosely coiled in a large light box rather than packed tightly into a small heavy one.
Tangling is a five-minute problem in January
Lights and garland tangle because they were put away quickly. Winding each string onto a piece of card, or into its own bag, costs a few minutes in January and saves an hour in November.
Label the bag with where the string was used. Next year the question is not how long is it, it is which one went on the porch.
Keep the moulded inserts
Ornaments arrive in shaped inserts that are better protection than anything you will improvise, and they stack. Throwing them away in a burst of tidying is the commonest cause of a broken glass collection.
Where inserts have been lost, egg boxes and compartmented plastic organisers do the same job. What matters is that ornaments are not touching each other.
Photograph the tree before dismantling
A picture of the finished tree and of each decorated room takes thirty seconds and answers next year’s questions immediately: how the garland was run, where the good ornaments sat, how much ribbon was used.
It also tells you what you actually own, which is the information you need when deciding what to buy while the season’s stock is still available.
Make the shortfall list in January
The moment you know you were three ornaments short or ran out of garland by the top of the tree is the moment you are packing it away. That knowledge is gone by autumn.
Write it on a note and put it in the box. Seasonal stock is committed months ahead and the deep colours sell out first, so buying to a list early is the difference between getting what you wanted and taking what is left.

Ordering, delivery and returns
There is one delivery rate, $5.99, and it is removed at $49. Orders are packed in one to three business days and travel for five to ten, so plan on six to thirteen business days between placing an order and opening the box. Everything ships from Brooklyn, NY, to United States addresses.
