Almost everybody buys too little garland, and they buy it twice: once optimistically, and again two days later when the tree is half done. The arithmetic is not complicated, it is just not obvious, because a tree consumes far more length than its height suggests.
These are the working figures we give people at the counter.
Trees: nine feet per foot of height
A seven-foot tree needs about sixty-three feet of garland for a full wrap with visible spacing. That is more than most single packs contain, which is why fifty-foot lengths exist.
The figure assumes a spiral with roughly a hand’s width between passes. A sparser look drops it to around six feet per foot of height; a dense traditional wrap pushes it towards twelve.
Staircases: the banister length plus a third
Measure along the banister rather than the floor, then add a third for the drape between fixing points. A garland pulled tight along a rail looks like a rope; the swag is the point.
Deeper swags need more again. If you want the loop to fall a foot below the rail, add half rather than a third.
Mantels and doorframes
A mantel wants its own width plus about half, so a six-foot mantel takes nine feet. That allows the ends to fall at each side, which is what stops it looking like a strip laid on a shelf.
A standard doorframe takes about eighteen feet to go up, across and down with a modest swag at the top. Two doorframes are a twenty-foot pack short.
Lit and unlit are different products
The tinsel and wire garlands here are unlit. Lighting is separate, which gives you control over spacing and colour temperature but means it is a second decision rather than one purchase.
If you are combining them, run the lights first and the garland second. Doing it the other way round means removing the garland to fix a bulb.
Bendable wire versus plain tinsel
Wire-cored garland holds a shape, which matters on a mantel or a stair rail where you want the swag to stay put. Plain tinsel drapes under its own weight and is better on a tree, where gravity does the work.
Wire also survives being packed away and reshaped next year. Tinsel flattens, and a garland that has spent a year compressed in a box needs shaking out and will still be thinner than it was.
Buy the length now, not in December
Seasonal ranges are committed months ahead and cannot be reordered mid-season. A colour that sells out in November does not come back that year.
The practical consequence is that buying the full length in one order is safer than buying half and topping up, because the top-up may not exist. It also means one delivery charge rather than two.

Ordering, delivery and returns
There is one delivery rate, $5.99, and it is removed at $49. Orders are packed in one to three business days and travel for five to ten, so plan on six to thirteen business days between placing an order and opening the box. Everything ships from Brooklyn, NY, to United States addresses.
